ACWA Working Party

On 21-May-2006 a sixth Working Party progressed the project to replace all stiles on the "After Tea" walk from Stoneleigh.  The walk is now stile free.

At the start of 2006 the walk included a possible 12 stiles when all the field gates are locked shut (a minimum of 9 at any time).  After these six Working Parties there are Eleven less stiles. The twelth stile, "Stile 4" will not be replaced at present, but will be addressed when the field gate is replaced.  A likely solution is to fit a new field gate, which incorporates a pedestrian gate.

Gate 7 the last gate to be completed, with a seat installed at the same time in memory of the stiles.

May Achievements

We have installed kissing gates to replace "stile 7" and "stile 8".  Thanks to the suggestion from KFPG, we also installed a seat, made from the step of one of the stiles.

Unfortunately (new or upgraded) self closing springs still need retro fitting to many gates.  New supplies to allow this are due any day now, and we still hope all can be installed, together with a few minor finishing touches before the end of May, or certainly before the next full Working Party day.

Plans

The next Sunday session will be on:
Sunday 18th June 2006 at 10:00 am to about 1:00 pm
Meet at stile 4 : GR 289 864 (where ACW leaves B4098 south of
         Fillongley - see Map17).
Park : INSIDE the metal field gate about 100m N past stile 4 going
         towards Fillongley
(I will bring tools, and park on verge near gate if possible)
Task : to replace stiles 4 and 5, and construct a new sleeper bridge
        near stile 5.

We intend to make our next big project improvements to all difficulties on the 40-Mile A Coventry Way route.  Priority will be given to features difficult for all, but over time we expect this to include upgrading all stiles to kissing gates.  Work is also planned on some particularly difficult features of the 21 Circular Walks.  More details later as our plans are evolved.

Dates for the rest of 2006 are then as follows:

  • Sunday 23rd July (Sunday 16th July rearranged due to Godiva Festival that day)
  • Sunday 20th August
  • Sunday 17th September
  • Sunday 15th October
  • Sunday 19th November

Why not volunteer to join us whenever you can?
