ACWA Working Party

On 2-Sep-2009 a Working Party installed a new Boardwalk and a new kissing gate on or near the ACW route just north of Carol Green.

The New Boardwalk nearing completion : 2-Sep-2009
The New Boardwalk nearing completion : 2-Sep-2009

September Achievements 1 (to be cont. on WP News 45)

The new Boardwalk is located at the point where ACW turns left near a pond (GR 256 784).  The boardwalk crosses the marshy/muddy/flooded area which has often been a "difficulty" at this point.  The photo below shows the layout of the kit indicating where it all has to be installed, with one of the supports lying on its side (near foreground) and holes for it being dug.  Altogether 18 holes had to be dug - maybe we'll call it the golf boardwalk?

The new k/g is on Circular Walk 3 at the point where it leaves ACW (GR 258 783), replacing a stile which was too near a ditch and eliminating the unused "barbed wire field gate" alongside the old stile.

A very hard days work, with our latest finish yet (about 4:00pm).  Fortunately the rain forecast for "just after lunchtime" held off till we had finished, starting gently as we lugged the tools back to the road.  Equally fortunately our planned lunch at the Bear in Berkeswell was still possible at c.4:30, because the Bear is open all day, and all who decided to eat at this time very much enjoyed the good value meals served.  We were also very satisfied that we had at last tried building a boardwalk, and that another priority hazard has been improved.

Plans

The next sessions planned are:

1st  Wednesday 16th September 2009 at 9:30 am to about 1:00 pm
Location: On Circular Walk 7, the section between Cubbington and Stareton where the path crosses Coventry Road just south of Furzen Hill Farm
Park at: Near Site 1 (GR 346 700)
Meet at: Site 1 (GR 346 700)
Task(s):

Replace one stile with K/G at Site 2 + two stiles with p/gs at Site 1 and Site 3.   See Map for Details of Locations which also shows stiles to be replaced at a later date

2nd Wednesday 7th October 2009 at 9:30 am to about 1:00 pm
Location: Carol Green
Park at: Park in the car park of The Bear at Berkeswell (GR 246 791)
Meet at: Meet in the car park, and we will then arrange a shuttle service to get everyone to the junction of Spencers Lane with path M206 about 350 yds from junction with ACW towards Berkeswell (GR 256 780)
Task(s): Finishing touches to new boardwalk at site 1 (GR 256 784), and a new k/g at site 8 (Item 17 on map - GR 256 786), north of site 1, and maybe a second new k/g?
see Map for Details of Locations

The further extra WP day - Wednesday 7-Oct is now proposed - see above for likely tasks.  The task will almost certainly complete our tasks on the Benton Green to Carol Green project.

The expected dates are therefore:

  • Wednesday 16 Sep
  • Wednesday 7 Oct
  • Wednesday 21 Oct
  • Wednesday 18 Nov
  • Why not volunteer to join us whenever you can?

Please contact Bob Carey on 024 7645 5251 for further information.
