The new k/g completed : 17-Feb-2016

February Achievements

On 17-Feb-2016 a WP Replaced 1 Stile on Hob Lane with a kissing gate, added 3 new Way Mark Posts and tidied a few other WMPs (for example the reused rotten post from the left side of the old stile becoming the WMP bolted to the right side of the new k/g, and one leaning WMP nearly falling into a ditch).  All sites are on Circular Walk 3 SW segment.

Phill had arrived with all the materials we needed delivering the new WMP close to the sites and the k/g to the site on Hob Lane. (Phill stayed until we started demolishing the stile - this was so he could recover the "synthetic wood" step for reuse on another stile, and continue monitoring that such expensive material is well worth it because it "lasts for ever")

The k/g installation went smoothly, in spite of too many people knowing how to do it quicker and was finished by 11:30.

A smaller group of 3 or 4 drove round to Black Hales Farm to add the 3 new WMP between there and Moat Farm.  All went well, and the team was back before the k/g was declared finished.

Good use was made of the yellow waterproof/warm jackets supplied by SMBC.  The forecast was wet, and so was the weather, but we had finished before if got even wetter.

Afterwards 6 of us went to the The Bear at Berkswell for lunch.

Plans

The next WP is due on on Wednesday 17th March 2016 - Details below.

Note that the WP to build the new boardwalk to extend the "long bridge to mud" to reach dry grass, north of Carol Green will not be possible until mid-2016.

Wednesday 16th  March 2015 at 9:30 am to about 1:00 pm
Location: On Circular Walk 6 at Stoneleigh.
Park at:

Leamington Road, Stoneleigh layby near ACW crossing (GR 332 720) or in layby or verge near Sites 3, 4 & 5

Meet at:

Leamington Road, Stoneleigh layby

Task(s):

Repair k/g and improve path surfaces and drainage

see Map for details

The priority will be :

  1. Complete K/G 1 and K/G 2 tasks (These were planned for May-2015, but permission was not granted in time - one year later is better late than never!)
  2. Make improvements at Sites 3 & 4 which are improvements for ACW Challenge route.
  3. Make improvements at Site 5 if we have time and timber not needed for above. (... and of course volunteers still willing to work another hour or so!)

In the first place we will concentrate on simply digging drainage features and using the soil to raise the path levels to be higher than the surrounding area.  If we can get material to then make a long lasting surface we will do that - but we may not have acquired material &/or get agreement by the WP - in which case we may return again later in the year.

Note that the WP to build the new boardwalk to extend the "long bridge to mud" to reach dry grass, north of Carol Green will not be possible until mid-2016.

The probable 2016 dates (assuming 3rd Wed every month Jan-Nov as agreed at the AGM) will be:

  • 16-Mar-2016
  • 20-Apr-2016
  • 18-May-2016
  • 15-Jun-2016
  • 20-Jul-2016

  • 17-Aug-2016
  • 21-Sep-2016
  • 19-Oct-2016
  • 16-Nov-2016
  • Why not volunteer to join us whenever you can?  Please contact Bob Carey on 024 7645 5251 for further information.
