On 21-Sep-2016 a WP installed 2 k/g near Lavender Hall Fishing Lakes, one on Walk 2 and the second on M196 nearby

September Achievements

Site 1.  Installed a new k/g to replace a stile and rebuilt a previously very poor fence.

The first task was to trim back the hedge to improve the path and cut back a space to fit the hoops.

The k/g fitted in well after we realised that the best way was to completely dismantle the two short fences.

Our original plan was to also improve the steps near Site 1, but we soon realised time and effort made that impractical.  We will be back soon (probably October?) to do that task, and maybe to also improve the drainage on the other side of the k/g.

Note:  This photo included site for improved steps and (in foreground) site for action to improve draining over the blocked culvert.

New k/g  & repaired fence at Site 1 : 21-Sep-2016

Site 2.  Installed a new k/g to replace a very poor stile.

This stile was in very poor condition and hard to use.

The new k/g proved hard to install due to stoney ground, but was very much appreciated by local users

New k/g at Site 2 (Path M196)  under construction : 21-Sep-2016

We had 7 volunteers to work, plus Bob C to cheer us on while avoiding to damage his finger recovering from an operation a few days before!

A day of mostly fine weather, with only a few drops of rain.  We finished at 13:58 - too late for hot food at the on site cafe, but had hot or cold drinks, and snacks while sitting on their veranda.  A very pleasant spot!!

The next WP is due on on Wednesday 19th October 2016 - return to Lavender Hall Fishing Lakes - details below..

Note that the WP to build the new boardwalk to extend the "long bridge to mud" to reach dry grass, north of Carol Green will not be possible until later in 2016.

Wednesday 19th October 2016 at 9:30 am to about 1:00 pm

Location: Lavender Hall Fishing Lakes (GR 243 778).  Access from Lavender Hall Lane along private track (see Map)
Park at:

Near Fishing Lakes BUT respect the Fisherman's usage (see Map for 3 possible parking sites)

Meet at:

Near Site 1 or the Tool Wagon parking space (see Map)

Construct improved steps just SW of KG 1 and add new WMP to p/g at site 3.
         see Map for details

We just need to be sure not to interfere with fishermen's parking spots.  There will be a fishing competition on that day, so please:

  1. Share cars when possible to minimise need for parking spaces
  2. Park in places a bit further away if you don't have tools etc. to carry.

Note that the "(maybe) improve draining over the blocked culvert just NE of K/G1" task will not be done this month, but SMBC are considering how best to fix the problem.

The probable 2016 dates (assuming 3rd Wed every month Jan-Nov as agreed at the AGM) will be:

  • 19-Oct-2016
  • 16-Nov-2016
  • Why not volunteer to join us whenever you can?  Please contact Bob Carey on 024 7645 5251 for further information.
