We replaced 4 missing large sleepers on CW1 just before Pickford Green Lane. On arrival we found the closure notice dated 7 January 2016  saying “Maximum closure duration 21 days”. Hence priority WP at short notice! We soon saw the problem (photo above on left).

Simon had arrived with all the materials we needed to repair the bridge, and a well worked out plan of how to manage with the modern sleepers 7″ shorter than the old “real railway sleepers” we had used on 16 February 2011, timber for extending the bearer etc. and bricks & stones for dealing with the muddy area. All went well, and was finished by Noon including a trip to get more stones and tidying up the area by the road steps.

Afterwards 4 of us went to the The Queens Head pub for lunch.

On 20 January a second work party improved the ACW path over the first 200m heading South from the start at the Queens Head. Tasks included:

  • Cleaning the surface of the steps and trimming back the ivy.
  • Adding a short support post to make solid the slam post of the first wooden kissing gate.
  • At the second wooden kissing gate the path surface was improved by digging the level to a better profile, arranging paving slabs in the centre of the kissing gate and building a step to make the first step up towards the field to be a solid wood and paving slab. Various repairs were also do to improve gate and fence, and smoothing the gradient on approach from each side.
