2 Family walking relay of 4 legs of 10 miles each, Iris and Cyril doing alternate legs.
This was the first “challenge”, but in 1997 it was known as a charity event. It was organized by John Green’s “Justice on Legs” committee.
It started at the Queen’s Head on 5th October 1997.
The weekend before, John Green, supported by family and friends walked the route over two days.
It was a charity event that raised significant amounts for Macmillan Nurses and Coventry Crossroads.
Basil Heatley, Silver Medallist for the Marathon at the Tokyo 1964 Olympics attended the event and took part in the celebrations.
Simon Harper and Ian Davies completed the course, setting a time to beat of 7 hours 23 minutes.
Chris Stokes finished with them but had started at a slightly earlier time.
The Octavian Droobers relay team set a target of 5 hours 40 minutes for future challengers.
Iris and Cyril Bean completed a family walking relay of 20 miles each in 10 mile bursts in 13 hours 30 minutes.
Ian Davies produced the famous green shirts.
