Work Party News

8 March 2023
Having received a report of a wobbly and potentially unsafe stile on the Challenge event route our work party assembled and set out to carry out the necessary repair work. The stile is located on a section of path in Corley Moor, which necessitated carrying tools and pushing a wheelbarrow on a half-mile trek from the closest roadway. This was augmented by hoisting the wheelbarrow and its contents over an intervening stile and kissing gate.

The warm-up exercise complete the work party set to to remove the wobbly stile step and dig out the stumps of the supporting posts which had rotted through at ground level.

The wobbly step

As if on cue it was then that the snow started to fall. More than a little effort was needed to extract the stumps which, although somewhat rotted, were well-embedded in the ground.

One new post in, one to go

With the two new support posts in place, and just as the step was being nailed back in position, a walker came by who conveniently tested out the handiwork, declared it a good job and thanked the work party for their efforts in maintaining the route.

Job done

By this time the snow was falling steadily so, job done, wheelbarrow and tools were gathered up for the warm-down trek back to the cars where the gang indulged in some of Bob’s home-made apple cake.
