Work Party News

21 March 2023
Again, in readiness for the forthcoming Annual Challenge event our work party set out to trim back the hedges alongside the footpath as it emerges onto Lower Road in the village of Barnacle. This section of path, commonly referred to as “the tunnel” passes between the gardens of two houses, bordered on one side by a tall beech hedge, on the other by a stretch of Leylandii.

The first difficulty the work party encountered was finding a safe place to park. Barnacle, being a small village, has a narrow road through it that makes parking in the roadway somewhat unsafe. A local person suggested the Village Hall car park, so we headed there where we met another villager who was about to open up the village hall for their weekly coffee morning. Explaining our mission was enough to get permission to park there.

Armed with several cordless hedge trimmers, plus some old-fashioned hand shears for the tricky bits the work party quickly opened up the pathway to afford better access for the Challenge event participants, and indeed for anyone else walking that section of footpath.

After clearing up we headed back to the cars and, after putting away the tools and changing footwear one of our number suggested we join in the coffee morning where we enjoyed some pleasant conversation with several local people whilst partaking of coffee and slices of homemade cake in return for a donation.
